Search for the best coffee beans in South Africa and you mostly get long lists of brands. What most people actually need is a way to choose: which beans suit their grinder, their machine and their taste, and where to buy them fresh.
I'm Ndimphiwe, founder of Kwantu Beans Co., a 100% Arabica coffee brand built in Cape Town. This guide is what I look for in a bag of coffee, and how I'd match beans to the way you brew at home.
Espresso machine — a dark or medium/dark roast with a rounded, low-acid profile suits milk drinks and gives a thicker crema.
Filter or pour-over — a brighter medium roast, such as a single origin, brings out citrus and fruit notes.
French press or plunger — medium roasts with good body work best, and they won't turn bitter.
All our coffee is 100% Arabica, washed processed and packed fresh. Bags start from R130 for 250g.
You can buy from a supermarket, a local roaster or direct online. Buying direct from a roaster means you deal with the person who blends your coffee. Kwantu Beans Co. delivers nationwide: orders are dispatched within 24 hours, arrive in 2–4 working days to main centres and 3–5 working days nationwide, and delivery is free over R400.

What are the best coffee beans for a beginner?
A medium or medium/dark blend that is smooth and balanced is the easiest place to start. Kwantu Classic and Kwantu Harmony Blend are good first bags.
Should I buy whole bean or ground coffee?
Whole bean keeps its flavour longer, so grind just before brewing if you can. If you do not own a grinder, choose your grind (espresso, filter or French press) on the product before you add it to your cart and we will grind it for your method.
Is Arabica better than Robusta?
Arabica is generally preferred for sweeter, more nuanced flavour. Robusta is stronger and more bitter with more caffeine. Many cheap blends include Robusta, so check the label. All Kwantu coffee is 100% Arabica.
How long do coffee beans stay fresh?
Beans taste best within a few weeks of roasting. Keep them in an airtight bag or container, away from light and heat.
